General information about Alexandria

Health

The number for a medical emergency in Egypt is 123.

Before travelling to Egypt, the British government encourages travellers to make sure that they have adequate travel insurance and have followed the recommended vaccination program. The two most important vaccines for every traveller is Yellow Fever, Tetanus and Hepatitis A, but depending on the nature of the stay vaccination against Hepatitis B, Rabies and Typhoid is recommended. There is a low risk of Malaria in Egypt, but one case was reported in 2014, thus it is recommended to use bug repellent to try and avoid being bitten by bugs or ticks.

It is important, however, to check the latest health update on Egypt from the National Travel Health Network and Centre on their TravelHealthPro website.

Hospitals in Alexandria

Alexandria is famous for its healthcare and has a wide range of hospitals across the city. In most major hospitals, the doctors can speak English and there are pharmacies open 24/7, selling basic drugs without a prescription.

Agial Hospital, located near the sea is ranked as one of the city’s best according to Medarabia. Many of the private hospitals can be very luxurious, offering big, private rooms and hotel-like beds.

It is important to note, however, that there have been cases of doctors overcharging tourists for their medical service. Examine the bill closely and challenge prices that seem exaggerated. The pharmacies usually sell medication cheaper than the hospitals, so try to access drugs there if possible.

Food and Water

In the cities, the tap water in Egypt is not contaminated, but highly chlorinated and it may take a long time to get accustomed to. Therefore it is better to buy and drink bottled water, to prevent any stomach issues.

The food is generally safe to eat, but remember to clean fruit or vegetables before eating them.
